If claw machines of the past were just a corner in an arcade, today's claw machine arcades have become independent commercial spaces. Claw machines offer immediate fun for little money, providing great satisfaction to those who prefer short, intense entertainment without spending a lot. A single play usually costs between 500 and 2,000 won, which is not a heavy burden, and success brings immense joy and a sense of accomplishment. For office workers, claw machines are a 'small but certain happiness' during lunch breaks, and for the younger generation, they are gaining popularity in conjunction with the keyring trend.

As of 2026, the number of unmanned claw machine stores has reportedly doubled compared to the previous year. Most claw machine arcades are unmanned, with well-equipped card payment systems, requiring less operating staff and making 24-hour operation easier. This low barrier to entry for starting a business is also a reason for the rapid expansion of stores.

## What's different from Japan's Gacha?

To foreigners, Korean claw machine arcades and Japanese gacha shops might seem similar. Both share commonalities: you get character goods for a small amount of money, and the stores are packed with machines. How did you like the Olive Young Skincare Recommendations Part 1 and 2 that I posted last time? I'm enjoying writing these posts as I organize the products I usually use one by one. I plan to share more of my experiences with products I've personally used and found good, as well as my skincare routines.

Today, I'm going to focus on sunscreens and mask packs, organizing the ones I've found good among those I usually use. These are essential products in a skincare routine, and especially as the weather gets warmer these days, I tend to pay more attention to sunscreens.

This post will also be written casually, focusing on products I've personally used. I hope it helps you when choosing skincare products at Olive Young.

I usually find products containing Cica ingredients work well for me, and among them, products with Madecassoside specifically feel even better for my skin.

It's a product I often reach for these days because it feels soothing when my skin is sensitive or red. The sheet adheres well to the skin, and there's plenty of ampoule, so I was quite satisfied with the user experience.

I'll also share one of my usage tips. First, I hydrate my skin with toner, then before applying the mask pack, I squeeze out the ampoule inside and apply it to my face. If I apply the mask pack on top without letting it fully absorb, I feel like the active ingredients absorb better under the mask pack. This is my small personal tip!

I usually leave the mask pack on for about 20 minutes. It's great because I can use my time efficiently by applying it right after washing my face, showering the rest of my body, drying my hair, and then removing it.

It feels like it helps soothe and moisturize the skin, and I was particularly satisfied when using it from the day after extraction. On the day of extraction, I usually do a light skincare routine, as introduced in a previous post, to minimize irritation.

Using a mask pack on the morning of an important event or the night before makes my skin feel hydrated, and makeup applies much better, which I find satisfying.

This mask pack is recommended for those with sensitive skin who are concerned about redness or heat, and for those who find Cica ingredients work well for them.

Next, I'll review HERA UV Protector Tone-up Peach sunscreen.

I don't usually wear heavy makeup; I tend to finish lightly with sunscreen followed by a cushion foundation. However, on days when I'm too lazy to even apply cushion, I sometimes finish my morning skincare with just a tone-up sunscreen.

Applying sunscreen is said to be one of the easiest ways to prevent aging. I'm sure almost everyone applies sunscreen, right? I always finish the last step of my morning skincare routine with sunscreen.

I used to enjoy using Lancôme Tone-up Sunscreen, but the price was quite burdensome, so I looked for another product and ended up buying HERA UV Protector Tone-up Sunscreen. After using it myself, I liked its smooth application and the tone-up color.

With an SPF 50+ / PA++++ rating, it strongly blocks UV rays and is said to help block fine dust, so I could use it with even more peace of mind.

The tone-up sunscreen naturally brightens my skin tone, and its adherence is good, so even when I apply cushion on top, it doesn't feel cakey.

I usually alternate between two types of sunscreens. Depending on my schedule or whether I'm wearing makeup, I might use a tone-up sunscreen or a colorless product.

I use the HERA tone-up sunscreen introduced earlier on days when I wear makeup or go out lightly, and on days I spend at home or only have a brief outing, I use Mediheal Madecassoside Moisture Sun Serum.

As the name suggests, this product is a sun care product with a serum texture full of moisture. It's characterized by a much lighter and more hydrating application than typical sunscreens. I also liked that the opening is very pointed, allowing me to apply it directly to my face without dispensing it onto the back of my hand, making it hygienic to use. This product contains Madecassoside, and personally, the Mediheal Madecassoside line works well with my skin, so I'm even more satisfied using it.

As someone with dry skin, I tend to finish my skincare with multiple hydrating steps, but sometimes when I apply a product with too much oiliness in the final step, the previously applied products feel like they're pilling. However, this sun serum has a light serum texture, so it maintains hydration without feeling heavy, making it great for daily sun care. This product is actually so famous at Olive Young that you've probably seen it before. It's always displayed in stores and is often mentioned as a hydrating serum.

Torriden DIVE-IN Low Molecular Hyaluronic Acid Serum is a water-type serum full of moisture, perfect for light use after toner. Although it's a serum, it's almost never heavy or oily, absorbing refreshingly into the skin. It feels like it replenishes moisture without being burdensome, making it a good product to use all year round.

I usually use it right after toner. Lightly layering it on the skin provides a non-sticky hydration, making it great for a daily serum.

My skincare routine varies slightly depending on the season.

In summer, I use a relatively light routine: toner → serum → barrier cream. Since the serum itself is a refreshing, watery type, it hydrates without feeling heavy, making it comfortable to use even in hot weather.

Conversely, in winter, my skin tends to get drier, so I use it with the products I'll introduce later, supplementing the oil and moisture that the hydrating serum might not fully provide.

If you're looking for a serum that lightly replenishes moisture, I think this is a good, versatile daily hydrating serum.

Have you ever heard the term "Secolji"?

Secolji is an abbreviation for Ceramide + Collagen + Fatty Acid, referring to the three key components that make up our skin lipids. 

The "311" in the product name indicates that these three ingredients are blended in a 3:1:1 ratio. Dr. Different offers creams with different Secolji ratios tailored to various skin types. For example, you can choose based on ratios like 3:1:1 / 1:3:1 / 1:1:3 to suit your skin type.

Since my skin type is dry, I chose this product because the 311 cream, with its high ceramide ratio, suited me well.

The texture is a smooth, non-flowing cream type, not too heavy, and felt comfortably adherent to the skin. I usually apply it by gently cupping my face with my palms, then softly rolling it in to allow for slow absorption.

Its moisturizing effect is quite good, and above all, it's said to help with skin barrier care, which made it relatively suitable for my dry skin that occasionally gets small breakouts or troubles.

If you have dry skin and want to focus on both moisturizing and skin barrier care, I think this cream is worth considering.

La Roche-Posay's Cicaplast line is so famous for its soothing care products that many people have probably heard of it. It's widely known as a good product to use when skin becomes sensitive or irritated.

The texture is a not-too-thin cream type that feels like it forms a thin protective layer on the skin, and after applying, my skin felt a bit more comfortable. I often use this for soothing, especially when my skin is dry, not in good condition, or has become sensitive.

In particular, I regularly receive skin extraction treatments, and my skin can become sensitive afterward. When that happens, using this cream makes my skin feel relatively comfortable.

Currently, the weather is still a bit dry, so I'm managing my skin with a routine that includes the Dr. Different 311 Secolji Cream introduced earlier. I use the Secolji cream for basic moisturizing, and then layer the Cicaplast Multi-Repair Cream to further soothe and comfort my skin.

Once the weather gets a bit warmer, I plan to reduce the frequency of one of them, depending on my skin condition. I'll probably use the Secolji cream as my main moisturizing cream normally, and the Cicaplast cream when my skin is particularly sensitive or needs soothing after extraction.

## 4. The Ordinary 100% Plant-Derived Squalane

If you have very dry skin and haven't felt much effect from any cream you've tried, you might want to pay attention to this product. There are times when, no matter how many layers of moisturizing products you apply, your skin only feels hydrated for a moment, and then wakes up dry and rough again. For those people, I personally highly recommend this product.

Squalane is one of the natural moisturizing factors found naturally in the skin's stratum corneum. This product contains 100% plant-derived squalane extracted from sugarcane, so in terms of texture, you can think of it as an oil-type serum.

I always use this product in my evening skincare routine. As the years went by, my skin felt drier every winter, but after using this product, I definitely felt my skin become much more comfortable.

It's also simple to use. You don't need a lot; 1-2 drops are usually sufficient. In the last step of your skincare routine, dispense it into your palm and apply it by cupping your face, starting from the cheeks. This helps keep your skin from feeling dry and relatively comfortable until the next morning.

In the dead of winter, when dryness was severe, I used it in both my morning and evening routines. Now that the weather has warmed up a bit, I only use it in my evening routine.

## The Growth of Daiso

To understand the background of Daiso's growth, one misconception must first be cleared. Daiso's success is not 'just because it's cheap.' Daiso enhances the vibrancy and diversity of its stores with seasonal themed products and character collaboration products. On its official website and YouTube channel, it introduces curations such as 'New School Year Beauty New Arrivals,' 'Beauty Week,' 'Household Bargain Sale,' and 'Return of Viral Items.' For Koreans, Daiso is a daily necessities store and, at the same time, a place to experience small, affordable trends most quickly.

The biggest competitive advantage of Daiso K-beauty seems clear: there are almost no entry barriers. Within Daiso's uniform pricing structure, you can try a variety of products affordably, from cleansing and mask packs to base makeup and beauty accessories, without burden. I usually prefer cleansing waters that are as gentle as possible, so after trying various options, I've been using Bioderma Hydrabio H2O Cleansing Water.

When it comes to Bioderma cleansing waters, the pink product is usually the most famous. However, since I have dry skin, I thought the blue Hydrabio product, which is for hydration, would be better, so I chose this one.

After using it myself, I definitely felt almost no strong irritation, and it was comfortable to use without burdening my skin.

Actually, at first, I even wondered if cleansing water might be irritating. Since cleansing water is usually applied to a cotton pad and wiped off, the continuous rubbing of the skin was a bit concerning.

So, I'm using it in a slightly different way. I pour the cleansing water into a foaming dispenser to create a foam, then use it as if washing my face. Using it this way seems to reduce the friction that can occur when wiping with a cotton pad, so I feel much less skin irritation.

Its cleansing power was also sufficient to remove daily makeup without much trouble. However, I don't usually wear heavy makeup, so for light makeup, it felt like it cleaned thoroughly.

Overall, after using it, I felt that if you're looking for a gentle and non-irritating cleansing water, it might be worth trying. Especially for those with dry skin or concerns about skin irritation, I felt it's a product that can be used relatively comfortably.

It's a low-irritation, gentle, mildly alkaline type, so it doesn't put much burden on the skin even after washing. I felt it's a product that can be used relatively comfortably by those who have had many concerns about irritation when choosing facial cleansers.

In particular, it contains a plant-derived ingredient called Aqualicia, so the skin doesn't easily dry out after washing and retains a moisturized feeling. Usually, after washing my face, I sometimes feel an immediate tightness, but with this product, that inner dryness was relatively less.

Another notable point was its cleansing power, which even removes fine dust and sunscreen. These days, I'm concerned about cleansing power due to fine dust and sunscreen, and I felt it has a decent cleansing power for daily use.

At first, I just casually thought, "Shall I try an enzyme cleanser?" But later, I found out it's introduced as a #makeupfriendly cleanser used in Cheongdam-dong salons. I remember feeling a bit proud, thinking, "Oh, I picked a good one!"

This product is more than just an enzyme cleanser; it can be used in various ways, like an enzyme cleanser + clay pack + scrub. It also caught my attention because it's said to help with exfoliation, blackheads, and sebum control.

I'm using the pink clay type, and it's said that the BHA ingredient helps to refine blackheads and the clay absorbs sebum. After actually using it, my skin feels refreshed after washing, so it's good for morning use.

The usage method can also be varied slightly depending on the situation.
- When you want to use it like a scrub, add only a very small amount of water.
- When using it as a daily enzyme cleanser, use water and powder in about a 1:1 ratio.
- When using it like a clay pack, add about 5 drops of water to use as a pack.

I usually use Lagom Cellup Micro Foam Cleanser almost every day, and I use this enzyme cleanser lightly about 2-3 times a week for my morning cleanse.

As I've used it consistently, I feel that my skin texture is a bit more refined in the morning, which makes my skincare products absorb relatively well, and my makeup also feels less prone to caking than before. That's probably why people call it a #makeupfriendly cleanser.

If you've found exfoliation products too irritating in the past, or if your makeup tends to cake, using an enzyme cleanser like this 2-3 times a week for maintenance might be a good idea.

One of the things I consider important in my skincare routine is the step of immediately replenishing moisture right after washing my face. Since my skin is on the dry side and feels tight quickly after cleansing, I prioritize products that rapidly provide hydration in the first step. That's why the product I'm currently using is Bioderma Hydrabio Essence Lotion.

Although this product is called an essence lotion, its texture is very light, almost like water. At first, I wondered, "Will something this light be moisturizing?" But after actually using it, it quickly absorbed into my skin and felt like it immediately replenished inner dryness, so I'm quite satisfied with it.

The scent isn't strong; it's subtle, making it pleasant to use without feeling overwhelmed. Personally, sometimes strong scents in skincare can feel a bit tiring, but this product didn't have that issue, which was good.

Originally, as a toner product, it has a small opening, so it can be used by dispensing it onto a cotton pad. I heard that a beauty tip about attaching a mist pump to this product and using it that way became quite popular on YouTube or somewhere similar in the past.

Perhaps because of that, these days, it sometimes comes with a spray pump type that allows for mist application. Being able to use the toner like a mist was quite convenient.

However, personally, I felt the spray power was a bit lacking. Rather than a fine, even mist, it tended to come out a bit coarsely, so I ended up using it more often by dispensing it into my hands and patting it in for absorption.

Nevertheless, if you have dry skin that feels tight immediately after washing, trying a toner like this—light yet quickly replenishing inner moisture—might be a good idea.

Personally, it was a product I was quite satisfied with for use as the first step right after washing my face.

Yeongwol is a travel destination where you can experience historical narratives alongside tranquil nature.

Yeongwol boasts several representative attractions, including Jangneung Royal Tomb, Cheongnyeongpo, Byeolmaro Observatory, Gossi Cave, Seondol Rock, and the Korean Peninsula-shaped terrain. Exploring these places together allows you to experience Yeongwol's atmosphere quite three-dimensionally. How about a travel itinerary where you leisurely walk in the footsteps of King Danjong during the day, admire the scenery created by the Donggang River, cliffs, and strange rocks in the afternoon, and gaze at the stars at night? Recently, with the influence of the hit movie ‘The Man Who Lives with the King,’ visitor numbers have surged, and during holidays, ticket sales close early due to high interest. A great place to visit along with Cheongnyeongpo is Jangneung Royal Tomb. Jangneung is the tomb of King Danjong, a highly symbolic place introduced as the first of Yeongwol's 10 scenic spots. King Danjong was dethroned by Grand Prince Suyang, and after a plan by loyal subjects to restore him to the throne was revealed, he was exiled to Yeongwol and passed away there. When Danjong died, no one dared to retrieve his body for fear of repercussions, but Eom Heung-do, a local official of Yeongwol, buried him. After King Jungjong, discussions arose in the court regarding rituals and a tomb for Danjong, and by the time of King Seonjo, a stone table, stele, stone lantern, and stone pillars were erected. In the 7th year of King Sukjong's reign (1681), Prince Nosan was elevated to Grand Prince Nosan, and in the 24th year of King Sukjong's reign (1698), he was posthumously restored to his royal title, and his tomb was named Jangneung (Source: [National Heritage Portal](https://heritage.go.kr/heri/cul/culSelectDetail.do?ccbaCpno=1333201960000&pageNo=1_1_1_0&sngl=Y)).

## Korean Peninsula-shaped Island and Observatory

The fact that this city isn't just a place to see history and leave makes it even more attractive. The Korean Peninsula-shaped terrain is considered one of Yeongwol's representative natural landscapes. It was named because the terrain, formed by a winding river, resembles the shape of the Korean Peninsula, and the view from the observatory is quite impressive. Seondol Rock, another of the 10 scenic spots, is a rock about 70m high, located within the Seogang River where it forms a cliff. Seondol Rock has a shape as if a giant knife had split the cliff and then stopped. ## History of the National Arboretum

Gwangneung Forest, where the National Arboretum is located, is a historic forest that has received special management since the Joseon Dynasty. After King Sejo's tomb, Gwangneung, was established in 1468, it was designated and managed as a royal tomb forest (neungnim) and served as a royal hunting ground (gangmujang) for the royal family.

During the Japanese colonial period, it was designated as 'Gwangneung Experimental Forest' in 1913, and with the establishment of the Forest Experiment Station in 1922, full-scale forestry research began. After Korea's liberation, it became the Central Forest Experiment Station under the Ministry of Agriculture and Forestry in 1957, and in 1987, it was newly established as 'Gwangneung Arboretum,' equipped with a forest museum and greenhouses. Subsequently, in 1997, government-level measures were put in place for the systematic preservation of Gwangneung Forest, leading to its elevation to the current 'National Arboretum'.

Established as an independent institution on May 24, 1999, the National Arboretum carries out important duties as a national representative research institute for forest biological species. Its main roles include surveying, collecting, classifying, and digitizing forest biological species both domestically and internationally. Furthermore, it focuses on discovering, preserving, and restoring forest plant resources, including rare and endemic species. In addition, it actively conducts garden research and supports national garden policies, provides forest environmental education and public relations, and carries out research activities to stably preserve the Gwangneung Forest ecosystem and biodiversity.

 

## Biodiversity of the National Arboretum

Gwangneung Forest, preserved intact for over 550 years, is a globally rare mature temperate deciduous forest in the northern temperate zone, holding immense ecological value. In terms of flora, 945 diverse plant species, ranging from young saplings to ancient trees, are distributed here. Moreover, Gwangneung Forest is a treasure trove of forest biodiversity, home to a wide array of species. Including the longhorn beetle, a natural monument, 3,977 insect species have been found, along with 180 bird species such as the black woodpecker, owl, fairy pitta, oriental scops owl, and mandarin duck, and 699 mushroom species, among countless other coexisting life forms. Recognizing its ecological importance and value, UNESCO's Man and the Biosphere (MAB) Programme officially designated Gwangneung Forest as a UNESCO Biosphere Reserve on June 2, 2010.

 

## Into the Nature of the National Arboretum – A Healing Journey Along Forest Trails

Pocheon National Arboretum is situated within a vast natural expanse covering an area of 11.24 square kilometers. It encompasses diverse ecological spaces, offering visitors a variety of experiences. In particular, the Forest Ecosystem Observation Deck, the forest path around Yukrimho Lake, and the Fir Tree Forest Path are considered must-visit attractions. Passing over the Arboretum Bridge at the entrance and following the deck section naturally leads to the eastern part of the National Arboretum. The Forest Ecosystem Observation Deck, located on the west side of the National Arboretum, is a 460-meter-long deck course built within the natural forest, meticulously designed to allow close observation of plants and insects without harming nature. Following the Forest Ecosystem Observation Deck leads to Yukrimho Lake and the Fir Tree Forest Path. The forest path around Yukrimho Lake is an ideal place for quiet contemplation while enjoying the serene lake scenery. The reflection of the forest on the calm water surface is like a painting in itself. And the indispensable Fir Tree Forest Path is rich in health-beneficial phytoncides, allowing you to enjoy a forest bath just by walking through it.
