You've probably heard of Chungbuk Danyang at least once. With the weather warming up and spring travel on our minds, if you're wondering where to go, Danyang is a truly excellent travel destination. Danyang is a place that stays with you for quite a while after you visit.

At first, I just thought it was a place with nice scenery, but after actually visiting, I realized that even though it's a nature trip, each scene leaves a completely different impression. So today, I'd like to introduce some memorable and representative Danyang tourist attractions that I recommend!

Danyang-gun, Chungcheongbuk-do

Danyang-gun, located in Chungcheongbuk-do, is a representative tourist city in Korea where the blue waters of the Namhangang River and the beautiful mountain ranges of Sobaeksan Mountain harmonize. Approximately 83.7% of its total area is mountainous, and it is characterized by well-developed limestone formations, leading to many mysterious caves and unique rock formations. Gosu Cave, famous for its limestone caves, is located right here.

Danyang has long been famous for Danyang Palgyeong (Eight Scenic Views of Danyang), eight beautiful sceneries centered around the Namhangang River. The eight scenic views of Danyang Palgyeong include Dodam Sambong, Seokmun, Sainam, Gudambong, Oksunbong, Sangseonam, Jungseonam, and Haseonam. The places visible along the Namhangang River and its tributary valleys boast incredibly beautiful and distinctly Korean landscapes.

Dodam Sambong and Seokmun

Dodam Sambong

Dodam Sambong, the most beloved of Danyang Palgyeong, is the most iconic landscape representing Danyang. The impressive sight of three rock peaks standing side by side in the middle of the Namhangang River makes it the first place visitors to Danyang seek out. While beautiful in photos, seeing the river and mountains together in person gives a much more refreshing feeling.

Dodam Sambong, with its harmonious blend of the Namhangang River, Sobaeksan Mountain, and surrounding scenery, was a favorite spot for numerous literati and painters, including Toegye Yi Hwang and Danwon Kim Hong-do, since ancient times. If you view it with the morning mist in early spring or autumn, you can witness a very mystical sight.

Near Dodam Sambong, you can also admire Seokmun, another of Danyang Palgyeong. Seokmun is a rainbow-shaped stone gate that appears after climbing about 15 minutes up the stairs to the left of Dodam Sambong. The view of the Namhangang River through Seokmun is exquisite!

If you want to properly experience Danyang's expansive views, this is a place you can't miss. Located atop a cliff overlooking the Namhangang River, it's a Danyang landmark offering panoramic views of Danyang city and the Sobaeksan Mountain range. It's a representative scenic viewpoint, excellent for introducing to foreign travelers, as it allows you to take in the city, river, and surrounding mountains at a glance.

Mancheonha Skywalk is more than just an observatory; it's also a complex extreme sports park where you can enjoy various activities. You can experience zip-lining, alpine coaster, slides, and a monorail. The nearby Danyanggang Jando is a 1.2km deck path connected to the Mancheonha Skywalk parking lot, built along the river's cliffs, giving you the feeling of walking above the river.

Gosu Cave

Gosu Cave

Gosu Cave is Danyang's representative natural limestone cave. This limestone cave, formed approximately 450 million years ago, has 940m of its total 1,300m length open to the public. With well-developed cave formations like stalactites and stalagmites, it's a great place to recommend if you want to experience Danyang's nature in a more mysterious atmosphere. Its cool indoor pathways also make it suitable for visits during hot seasons.

As it's considered a challenging limestone cave, the course is rugged, so be sure to wear the safety helmet and gloves provided at the entrance! The slopes are steep, and there are many wet sections, so athletic shoes are a must.

Ondal Tourist Site and Ondal Cave

Ondal Tourist Site

Ondal Tourist Site is a complex tourist destination themed around the legend of Princess Pyeonggang and General Ondal of Goguryeo. It recreates a Goguryeo-era palace and marketplace, and was a filming location for numerous historical dramas such as and . Ondal Tourist Site offers many attractions, including the Ondal Exhibition Hall, Ondal Fortress, and Ondal Cave. A major advantage is that a single admission ticket allows you to see the drama set, Ondal Exhibition Hall, Ondal Fortress, and Ondal Cave all together!

Ondal Cave

Ondal Cave is a limestone cave located within the Ondal Tourist Site, a great place to visit if you want to enjoy a more diverse cave experience in Danyang. Currently, some sections are open to the public, making it a good addition to a history-themed trip.

Sainam

Sainam

If you want to see a more tranquil and profound natural landscape of Danyang, this is the place I recommend. Sainam is one of Danyang Palgyeong, characterized by a scenery where towering bizarre rock cliffs and clear waters harmonize. It has a different charm from flashy, facility-based tourist attractions, making it well-suited for those who wish to experience Danyang's natural beauty more quietly.

For first-time visitors to Danyang, the most straightforward course is to visit Dodam Sambong → Mancheonha Skywalk → Gosu Cave in that order. This flow allows you to first see Danyang's representative scenery, then enjoy refreshing views from a high vantage point, and finally experience a different atmosphere in a cave, making it enjoyable for first-time travelers without any burden. Dodam Sambong, Mancheonha Skywalk, and Gosu Cave are consistently introduced as Danyang's core representative attractions, making them excellent to combine into a basic course.

If you want to explore at a more leisurely pace, I also recommend continuing with Sainam → Dodam Sambong → Mancheonha Skywalk → Gosu Cave → Ondal Tourist Site. This allows you to see Danyang's iconic landscapes and views first, then calmly proceed to the caves, making it easier to experience Danyang's charm in a more diverse way.

As you explore Danyang's representative tourist attractions, you'll naturally become curious about Danyang's unique local foods. Danyang is not just a place with beautiful scenery; you can also enjoy dishes with local character, so including one or two good restaurants during your trip will make it much more fulfilling.

If you desire a more generous set meal, visit this place. It's great for enjoying Korean set meal styles like Deodeok-gui (grilled deodeok root), Garlic Tteokgalbi, and Sanchaejeongsik (wild vegetable set meal), making it a good option for introducing Korean dining.

Bak Soggari

Bak Soggari

If you want to experience freshwater fish dishes in Danyang, this is a good place to include. You can taste Soggari Maeuntang (spicy mandarin fish stew), one of Danyang's representative foods, which offers a different local flavor of Danyang compared to garlic set meals. It's said that this restaurant's Soggari Maeuntang won the grand prize in a past local food competition!

Danyang seems to be a place where you can encounter different charms in succession, rather than a flashy tourist destination, from rivers and mountains to viewpoints, caves, and bizarre rock formations. By exploring everything from the refreshing scenery of Dodam Sambong to the views from Mancheonha Skywalk, the unique atmosphere of Gosu Cave and Ondal Cave, and the tranquil nature of Sainam, you can experience Danyang's charm in a more diverse way.

With the weather getting nicer these days, if you're looking for a domestic travel destination with beautiful natural scenery, I think a light trip to Chungbuk Danyang this time would be wonderful :)
